Liberty Aerospace, Inc. was formed in the year 2000, capitalizing on the amazing success of the Europa range of aircraft and advanced design capabilities rooted in the Airbus gene pool. While the road to FAA certification was a long one, the results speak for themselves.

In 1989, the Europa concept aircraft was born. This initial design was placed on paper by a former Airbus designer to bring advanced technology to the individual buyer. The initial prototype took flight in 1992 and reached worldwide acclaim by mid-1994. Pilot Magazine hailed it as "The most significant new light plane of the decade.” In 1999, it won the prestigious Aerospace Industry Award for Corporate and General Aviation at the Paris Air Show.

By the end of the decade, the Europa’s global acceptance had resulted in over 900 units sold in over 30 countries worldwide. The company turned its sights on the General Aviation market and Liberty Aerospace, Inc. was created.

An amazing team of engineers and designers were gathered to create an aircraft to meet the following requirements:

  • Low price
  • Efficient high speed cruise with STOL performance
  • Economy and ease of maintenance
  • Advanced structural materials offering strength and durability
  • Excellent handling and a positive stability profile
  • The ability to store at home on its own transporter.

The Liberty XL2 departed on its maiden voyage on April 2, 2001. The next four years were dedicated to extensive development and countless testing including, but not limited to, spin, fatigue, weight and balance, crash investigation and emergency departure.

On February 19, 2004 the FAA awarded Liberty with Part 23 Type Certification for the single-engine Liberty XL2. It was the first two-place aircraft to be awarded certification in over 30 years and the first piston-engine aircraft to be certified with a true Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system.

In October of 2004, Kuwait Finance House - Bahrain, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuwait Finance House and a leading provider of commercial and investment banking services, acquired a 75% stake in Liberty. This resulting financial alliance with this $11 billion firm has allowed Liberty to focus solely on delivering the XL2 aircraft to the international marketplace with strength and confidence.

Type Inspection Authorization from the FAA for Instrument Flight Rules operation was awarded on June 22, 2005. This positioned the XL2 to enter the final phase of testing for FAA certification.

May 1, 2006 was a historic day in the life of Liberty Aerospace. Happiness and relief were just a few of the emotions among the gathered employees when Liberty Aerospace was presented with a Production Certificate for the Liberty XL2 from the FAA. By having this certificate, the production process no longer had to rely on an FAA representative to personally inspect each aircraft as it leaves the production line as FAA-designated employees of Liberty now handle this process.

With the productivity rate now un-hindered, the company is now focused on delivering the world’s most innovative single-engine piston aircraft to its Founders' Club members, an extensive order book of private pilots and flight schools and the many new customers that are joining the Liberty Aerospace family every day.
